Notes
Father of Edith Mary Ellis (ID 120) and her siblings. Husband of Annie Ellis (ID 131). Born ~1850 in Scotland (per 1891 census). Occupation: Clerk at the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich (1891 census). Head of household in Charlton Next Woolwich in 1891 (household 975230) and 1901 (household 994159). Children at time of 1891 census: Ernest (Arthur Ernest, age 1), Emma (age 10, born Singapore), Richard (older son, age 13, born Kent), Edith M (age 5, born Kent). Children confirmed in 1901 census: Edith M (15, Canterbury), Richard W (13, Dover), Arthur E (11, Charlton), Samuel J (8, Charlton). Richard's death occurred between 31 March 1901 (when he is listed as head/husband in the 1901 census) and April 1911 (when Annie is listed as widowed). The 1901 household search in session 13 failed because Richard was born in Scotland, outside the expected birth range, and his record was not well-indexed under location-based searches. His presence in the 1901 household is confirmed via Annie Ellis's 1901 census record (wife, married, household 994159). Richard worked at the Royal Arsenal — the major government armaments facility in Woolwich — which explains the family's long residence in the Charlton/Woolwich area. The family also appears to have spent time in Singapore (daughter Emma born there ~1881) and moved through Canterbury and Dover before settling in Charlton by ~1890.
